ABOUT THE SONG:

PRETTY LIES exposes a frame of reference based on certain realizations about my beliefs and convictions that reflect the reality of social injustice and current business entertainment not to mention the numerous challenges and obstacles in advancing the role and position of women in the industry. The narrative of the song compelled me to make the video using strong images and statements that depict my frustration with deceitful acts, twisted games and exploitations by the powers that be. The octopus scene is the pinnacle of the story where the tentacles symbolize both sides of the coin - they represent the deep-anchored illusion that upholds the system’s network as well as the intelligence, insights and vision to unravel truths that influence positive change.

The lyrics for the song came to me while I was watching a documentary about the composer Antonin Dvorak, and learned the myth story behind his opera Rusalka. Dvorak had written this piece after being inpsired by a poem from his favourite writer Karel Jaromír Erben.

Mimoza H Bio

Based in Montreal and originally from Kosovo, Mimoza H is an independent autodidact singer/songwriter/multi-genre producer whose music has been described as “unique, intense and mysterious”. She is praised for a strong distinct voice enriched with a melancholy and delivered in a peculiar elegiac singing style. Her artistic approach (often compared to that of Björk, Wildbirds and Peacedrums, PJ Harvey, and Portishead), embodies an introspective journey of stories woven from her imagination and personal tumultuous life experiences.

In September 2016, Mimoza H released her debut EP titled ‘Uproot’ to some great audience reaction and music reviews in Canada, Quebec and Eastern Europe granting her “Artist to Watch” remarks from CBC Canada Premiere. Since her EP, she is set to release new music off her second EP.

Mimoza H is a gifted lyricist and she carefully ’paints’ with words that are abstract and image-driven yet meaningful as they convey a raw emotion enveloped by a wide sonic spectrum of organic sounds webbed into electronics delivering a blend of music styles: alternative, psych-pop, art-rock, and ethereal wave. At times bursting and eclectic, her music is a timeless experience fusing the reminiscent past with a breeze of an avant-garde. She draws influences from: Dead Can Dance, Kate Bush, Björk, Fever Ray, Roisin Murphy, Goldfrapp, PJ Harvey, Lhasa de Sela, Nick Cave, Ana Calvi, The Cure, Chinawoman, Bowie, Trentemoller, Lamb, as well as Southern Albanian music.

Mimoza H is one of the most fascinating artists I’ve come across in a long time. Her somewhat abstract music is like a cross between Florence + The Machine, Bjork and Tori Amos. That might not sound like a good combination, but to my ears it’s sonic bliss. I especially love how you never know where her songs are going to take you. They’re like six minute journeys through her wildly creative mind.” - Michael McCarthy

Love is Pop

Mimoza H is truly a wonder. Her voice, God, her voice is a total marvel. She sounds like Bjork or Kate Bush, with that marvelous influence of PJ and Nick Cave thrown in for good measure. […] This is an amazing artist that needs to be heard to be believed.” - Phil King

Audio Fuzz

Delivering a dark trip-hop and a quite unique sound, the musician demonstrates an undeniable artistic maturity. Drawing on life experiences from the memories of a devastating war onto the less intense, Mimoza H signs some mysteriously veiled music. ” - Antoine Bordeleau
